US Big Tech firms have been the recipients of some of the largest fines ever imposed by competition authorities in Europe.
The record penalties were aimed at achieving deterrence in the face of these companies’ size and resources.
The European Commission has fined Google a total of over €11bn across four separate abuse of dominance cases, making it by far the most heavily penalised company in EU antitrust history.
The Commission has also issued very large fines against Apple, Meta and Microsoft.
At the national level, the French and Italian competition authorities have levied substantial penalties of their own on Amazon, Apple and Google.
Cullen International’s infographic provides an overview of the biggest European antitrust fines on Big Tech firms, putting them in context and showing how the fines are calculated.
