The EU Data Act is a cross-sectoral regulation that establishes a legal framework for sharing data generated through the use of connected products and related services. It sets out data sharing provisions for business-to-business (B2B), business-to-consumer (B2C), and business-to-government (B2G) relations.
This regulation includes provisions aimed at enabling fast and fluid switching between data processing services (e.g. cloud providers) and abolishes switching charges from 12 January 2027. It also defines requirements of interoperability standards for data processing services, as well as of common European data spaces.
Most of its provisions will be directly applicable across EU member states on 12 September 2025.

National implementation of the EU Gigabit Infrastructure Act
The Gigabit Infrastructure Act (GIA) is a regulation and as such directly applicable in all member states without the need for transposition into national law. Despite being a regulation, the GIA often sets minimum requirements, on top of which member states can adopt additional measures to address country-specific circumstances.
