Two-thirds of mobile network operators in 12 analysed countries sold some or all of their towers to tower companies or funds. Traditionally, mobile operators owned and operated their own towers, but recently more and more mobile companies are selling their towers (passive equipment) to tower companies, while maintaining ownership of the active equipment.
Cullen International’s benchmark provides an overview of the different business models adopted in each country, whether tower companies are registered under the general authorisation regime and if governments adopted specific legislation to be able to stop towers’ foreign takeover.
