Regulating generative AI around the world 09 June 23 Elena Scaramuzzi

While most countries in the world tend to agree on the need to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to spur economic growth and innovation, there are different views on the possible approaches to mitigate possible risks bound to the use of AI.

Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT are currently in the spotlight. Several countries around the world are debating whether generative AI systems should be regulated, and how.

As regards the regulation of generative AI systems, this Global Trends research identified different approaches.

China already put forward a specific regulatory proposal, which is likely to be adopted by the end of 2023. Other regulatory proposals are under consideration in Australia, Canada, the EU, the UK and the US, amongst other jurisdictions around the world.

Our new Global Trends report addresses key questions on generative AI policies and regulations:

  • What type of risks are policymakers trying to address in relation to generative AI?
  • What is the meaning of “responsible use” of AI, depending on jurisdictions?
  • What type of regulatory approaches are emerging around the world?
