The European Commission has completed its initial work to define those economic activities that can be considered as environmentally sustainable under the EU taxonomy.
On 5 April, the Commission published the Taxonomy Environmental Delegated Act (the second delegated act on screening criteria). The delegated act comprised technical screening criteria for determining whether the targeted economic activities:
- make a substantial contribution to the four non-climate environmental objectives; and
- cause significant harm to any of the six environmental objectives.
The activities now listed included the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, treatment of hazardous waste, construction of new buildings, water supply, waste management, information and communication activities (related to data-driven solutions), environmental protection, and restoration activities.
This is the fourth delegated act under the EU taxonomy. The consultation runs from 5 April 2023 to 3 May 2023.
Cullen International's full analysis presents the features of the new criteria and puts the delegated act into context.
