Recent developments highlight how regulators across the Americas are adapting spectrum policy to support new network models, commercial 5G deployment and wider broadband use.
In Costa Rica, ICE selected Ericsson and Nokia to deploy its 5G network, which it expects to complete within 12 months. The Dominican Republic adopted final rules for a multiband auction, including 120 MHz in the 3.5 GHz band, while Paraguay consulted on and opened an auction to award 100 MHz in the same band.
The USA reconfigured the 900 MHz band to enable broadband use, allowing existing licensees to migrate from legacy narrowband systems and supporting the modernisation of critical infrastructure communications, particularly important for verticals. Colombia proposed using the 26 GHz band for private mobile and fixed networks that serve productive sectors.
