Despite the considerable efforts made by postal operators, there are still significant areas for improvement in the consistency of environmental reporting in the sector. Making these improvements would allow for a clearer understanding of the overall environmental impact of the postal sector and the extent to which postal operators are making progress to reduce their emissions.

In particular, postal operators could improve their consistency in terms of:

• including scope 3 emissions in their climate targets and environmental reporting;
• ensuring the publication of emissions targets and reporting the progress made towards achieving those targets;
• clarifying targets and statements made about renewable energy usage;
• contextualising targets and statements made about the transition to greener transport
• explaining the basis on which emissions are allocated between postal services when publishing postal metrics (e.g. emissions per letter or parcel).

This new report, from Cullen International’s recently launched Transport & Delivery Sustainability service, details how postal service providers currently report on their environmental performance, focusing on selected key aspects of environmental reporting, including:

• net zero or other climate-related targets;
• greenhouse gas emissions across the three different scopes;
• energy purchasing agreements and renewable energy targets; and
• progress on reducing reliance on fossil fuel-based transport.

The report covers the main postal operators in 17 European countries.
