The upper 6 GHz band (6425–7125 MHz) is currently subject to competing industry demands, namely for high-power licensed mobile use and for low-power unlicensed Wi-Fi use. Both technologies are standardised for the entire 6 GHz band (5925–7125 MHz).
Some regulators have adopted or are considering hybrid options that allocate the lower part of the upper 6 GHz band for unlicensed use and leave the rest for mobile communications or that allow sharing between mobile and Wi-Fi.
The debate in Europe as to the best way forward has intensified in the last few years, especially in light of continued discussions around technology sovereignty, the Union’s connectivity goals and an increased focus on global competitiveness.
Our new Tracker covers the work at European level to determine the approach to the future use of the band in the EU, including:
- the overall policy framework;
- the development of technical conditions for the shared use of the band; and
- related legislation.
