Satellite systems have increasingly become a cornerstone of modern communications, delivering essential services such as satellite navigation for everyday use and high-speed broadband access in remote areas.
The European Commission is developing a comprehensive approach to satellite connectivity, which has evolved over the last few years to address geopolitical, economic and technological challenges. The strategy is part of a larger push towards digital sovereignty and strategic autonomy in space and critical infrastructure.
The current focus of the Commission’s approach includes:
• satellite infrastructure;
• satellite spectrum; and
• new converged services like direct-to-device (D2D).
Our new Tracker provides a concise description of the EU’s flagship initiatives in each of these areas as well as the EU’s preparations for the World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27), where satellite features heavily on the agenda.
