All countries in the region, even those without a formal 5G strategy, have taken steps to promote 5G network deployment, including spectrum allocation.
In January 2025, Costa Rica awarded national licenses in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz, and 26 GHz bands to Claro and Liberty, and regional licenses to five local operators. In total, Sutel auctioned over 1000 MHz in the mid- and high bands.
Paraguay consulted on draft rules for awarding 400 MHz in the 3.5 GHz band. Argentina, Brazil, and Peru are also expected to award 5G spectrum in 2025, while Mexico suspended its planned 2024 auction.
Across the Americas, all countries except Paraguay have completed or are conducting 5G trials with operators and equipment manufacturers. In Brazil, new commercial 5G offers are available in over 1300 cities, covering nearly 30% of the country.
Our latest "5G Initiatives and Pioneer Bands" benchmark details initiatives beyond spectrum actions to make 5G available in eleven countries.
