This Global Trends benchmark analyses the level of adoption of open radio access network (RAN) architectures around the world. It covers Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union (EU), India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, the United Kingdom (UK), and the United States (US).

The research shows that open RAN public policy debates intensified over the past few years, with certain governments launching specific strategies to promote open RAN. However, open RAN is still at an early stage of adoption.

Across the 14 jurisdictions analysed:
 

• Five jurisdictions set strategies on open RAN, although specific measures to promote adoption of open RAN vary widely.
• Government authorities from four jurisdictions publicly supported the adoption of open RAN, while two jurisdictions are still considering whether open RAN should be actively promoted.
• Around 35 major telecommunications groups, vendors, and technology companies, including from China, Europe, Japan, Korea and the US, have taken the lead in open RAN standardisation work, in the context of two main industry initiatives: the O-RAN Alliance and the Telecom Infra Project (TIP).
