All the countries covered by Cullen International in this region (except Chile, where a proposal is still under consideration) allow online gambling in one form or another, subject to certain limitations. Most restrict online gambling from being promoted to children or to those with a gambling addiction.
Mexico has one of the most permissive regulatory regimes, while Canada’s is much more restrictive. For example, Mexico allows gambling on all forms of races and sports within its territory with no restrictions in the online sphere. In contrast, Canada generally forbids that gambling operations are conducted or advertised on Canadian soil.
In terms of applicable tax regimes, according to Cullen International’s research, most of the governments in the region tax online gambling winnings like any other income. But Argentina and Colombia have tax regimes that apply exclusively to online gambling.
