Open RAN at an early stage of adoption in the Americas 17 February 22 Alexandra Contreras Flores

Open radio access networks (Open RAN) allow mobile operators to use network equipment from multiple vendors interoperably. Using open RAN therefore could provide operators with more choice of vendors and could allow easier market entry for new vendors.

Cullen International’s new Americas benchmark shows that open RAN deployments in the region are still at an early stage. However, policy measures in support of open RAN have started to emerge in a few countries, and interest among industry is growing.

Across the 11 American countries researched, only Brazil and Mexico have issued strategies or initiatives on open RAN. In several countries, operators have started private initiatives, such as Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.

Only two countries have open RAN services commercially available. In Peru the “Internet para todos” project has rolled out some 650 open RAN sites, while the satellite operator, Dish, is deploying the USA’s first virtualised, standalone 5G broadband network.
