The EUdi Regulation amends the regulation on electronic identification and trust services (eIDAS).
It aims at improving the effectiveness and extending the benefits to the private sector of the eIDAS Regulation. Also, it promotes trusted digital identity solutions recognised across the EU.
The main innovation of the regulation is the introduction of digital wallets.
The regulation is directly applicable in all EU member states as of 20 May 2024.
However, member states will have to provide (by themselves or recognised by themselves) at least one digital wallet within two years (i.e. by 21 November 2026) after the adoption of Commission implementing acts outlining the technical specifications and certification requirements for digital wallets. These implementing acts should be adopted by 21 November 2024.
This cheat sheet offers a graphic representation and a summary of the main aspects of the digital wallet, including:
- the key principles of the digital wallet;
- the functioning of the EU digital identity ecosystem, including a case scenario;
- the main relevant aspects of the digital wallet; and
- under which circumstances private providers are obliged to accept the digital wallets.
