Spectrum auctions and international connectivity developments in Latin America 05 April 24 Javier Morales Fhon

The last three months have seen significant regulatory developments in Latin America (LATAM), including the award of and planning for 5G and IMT auctions, the promotion of spectrum access and sharing, and new satellite and submarine connectivity.

The Colombian multi-band spectrum auction of the 700 MHz, AWS, 1900 MHz, 2.6 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands awarded spectrum to four successful bidders for in total more than US$370m.  In Chile, Claro and Entel submitted offers in the 3.5 GHz spectrum tender. Peruvian authorities plan to auction the 3.5 GHz and 26 GHz bands for 5G services, while the Brazilian regulator consulted on future IMT spectrum awards.

Argentina authorised the operation of low space orbit satellite constellations by Space X, Kuiper and Oneweb. Brazil and Spain signed an agreement to promote satellite connectivity in underserved or unserved locations of Brazil. Chile launched the Humboldt submarine cable project, to connect Chile with French Polynesia and Australia, scheduled to be operational by 2026.
