Cullen International’s free one-hour webinar will provide an overview of the submarine communications cable market, including global trends, regulatory and security frameworks, and government investment and geopolitical initiatives.
RegisterSubmarine cables have been deployed and used for around 180 years by telegraph and then telecoms operators to connect communications services across the world. Since the 1990s, economic activities stemming from the deployment and exploitation of submarine cables has seen extraordinary growth. Submarine cables moved from Megabit-level capacity in the early 1990s to thousands of Terabits per second (Tbps) today.
In early 2025, there were over 1.48m km of submarine cables in service globally, accounting for over 99% of intercontinental data traffic. In recent years, the volume of data transferred via submarine cables has been expanding with the increasing data flows generated by cloud computing and other data-intensive services and applications. From 2014 to 2024, the industry installed approximately 700,000 km of cable (i.e. roughly half of the current worldwide total), attracting over US$17bn in investments.
The total number of active cables is constantly changing as new cables enter service and older cables are decommissioned. Currently, there are over 300 international submarine cables worldwide.
Cullen International’s free one-hour webinar will provide an overview of the submarine communications cable market, including:
- market information covering global submarine cable availability, ownership, and the key suppliers across the value chain;
- authorisation requirements for cable landing stations and foreign repair vessels, along with security and resilience measures; and
- government incentives to attract submarine cable investment and strengthen geopolitical influence.
