Gambling and betting are more accessible than ever, especially online and on mobile devices. Two of the ten largest online gambling markets in the world are in the Americas, where the popularity of online gambling is widespread. Many governments in the region are regulating online gambling and taxing gambling proceeds accordingly.
Our latest benchmark covers different aspects of online gambling regulation across eight Americas countries.
For example, the benchmark found that online gambling is:
- either tolerated or explicitly legal in all the surveyed countries except in Chile; and
- most countries are trying to find the right balance between legal gambling and related safeguards for minors and those suffering from gambling addictions.
Further, the research shows that gamblers need to pay taxes on their winnings in all the countries, except for Peru.
However, authorisation and tax regimes vary greatly across the countries and no single approach predominates.
