American countries are awarding more spectrum for IMT and 5G 11 February 22 Alexandra Contreras Flores

Countries in the Americas continue to award radio spectrum for 5G and other mobile services. Cullen International’s latest research details the most recent awards of spectrum licences in the IMT spectrum bands in the Americas.  Canada, Chile, Brazil and the USA assigned spectrum for 5G services, while Mexico assigned spectrum for mobile services.

In the US, the FCC assigned most of the spectrum available in the mid- and millimetre wave bands. In 2021, it assigned spectrum in the 3.7 GHz and the upper 37, 39 and 47 GHz bands. In January 2022, the FCC also awarded 100 MHz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band for US$22.4bn.  The spectrum offered in the 3.5 GHz band adds to the 70 MHz awarded in 2020 in the same band.

Chile and Brazil both held 5G multiband awards. The Brazilian auction rules notably took a novel approach, with mobile operators converting part of the upfront spectrum fees into additional coverage obligations.
