Regulation Made Simple

New benchmark on gender equality in TV programmes and advertising

Gender equality

This new benchmark shows whether there are rules on gender discrimination in television editorial and advertising programmes in the different EU member states covered by the research.

Our research shows that for television programmes, most countries have dedicated rules or co-/self-regulation in place to ensure gender equality in relation to public service television.

Only France, Spain and the UK have a legal set-up in relation to commercial television. On gender discrimination in advertising programmes, there are specific rules which go beyond the minimum rules of the Audiovisual Media Service (AVMS) Directive in six out of the nine selected countries.

This new benchmark has been published in the scope of our European Media service.
