Briefing on the end of roaming surcharges in the EU

Retail roaming surcharges for international voice, SMS and data have been abolished as of June 15, 2017. This concludes a legislative process of more than ten years.

The EU institutions celebrate the abolition of roaming charges as “one of the greatest and most tangible successes of the EU”. However, there remains scope for exemptions, making implementation potentially complicated. Furthermore, Digital Single Market vice president Andrus Ansip recently warned end users to “stay vigilant for unfair [domestic – Cullen] price hikes”.
